Lynne has created a calming mural for one of the consultant-led delivery rooms at Derby Royal Hospital, Labour Ward. The Mediterranean landscape themed mural evokes a feeling of calmness and reassurance. The design is aimed at all users of the department, including both male and female. The mural creates a subtle focal point without being overpowering or overbearing. Lynne said, ‘The mural was designed for Onnig Tamizian , one of the consultants at the hospital who was involved in both my pregnancies and delivered my second son. I consulted with him on what he would like and then designed it with a Greek flavour and also ensured it was in-keeping with the other mural designs around the unit. It was an honour and a privilege to design this for Onnig, a man who we respect and have come to know as a friend.’

Maternity Unit Mural, Derby Royal Hospital

Lynne has designed and painted an extensive mural in Ward 314 Maternity Unit at Derby Royal Hospital. The mural depicts a design featuring vines and orchids in a calming palettes. Lynne said, ‘Ward 314 is a very busy department, a nurturing and caring environment where parents are getting to know their new born babies, it is a very special place. I wanted a soothing yet celebratory design to run through the corridor and also in the lounge area, to create a memorable environment where parents can reflect and celebrate new beginnings’. Lynne used the strong symbolism of the orchid as she felt it was a fitting floral icon for the mural. The colour of the orchid delivers strong messages, it brings a universal message of love, beauty, wisdom, and thoughtfulness. In China it signifies refinement, and the innocence of children. A pink orchid signifies pure affection.

Antenatal Unit Waiting Areas, Derby Royal Hospital

Lynne has transformed the Antenatal Department at Derby Royal Hospital by creating a series of beautiful murals throughout the unit. The murals feature in the waiting areas for Antenatal Clinic, Pregnancy Day Care and Fetal Medicine and the link corridor between the Antenatal Clinic and the Scan Department. The theme for the Antenatal Department was garden blooms and the sense of blossoming which fits perfectly considering the use of this department. Lynne said, ‘This is a very busy unit and the waiting rooms are always busy, I wanted to create a mural that had relevance and depth, each part of the mural has a symbolic meaning from the buds to the curving and coiling vines to the flowers in full bloom, the mural tells a story.’

Staff and patients were consulted on design and Lynne came up with a series of themed mural that tie together across the departments and rooms. The murals feature design-led floral imagery and natural images such as trees and plants that evoke strong memories and feelings of calmness and well-being. The designs for the murals at all stages have been very carefully considered. Lynne said, ‘I want to ensure the resulting artwork has longevity, fits into its surroundings, and evokes a feeling of calmness and reassurance. With the designs I have created a strong sense of caring and nurturing that is aimed at all users of the department, including both male and female. The work will be a focal point without being overpowering or overbearing.’

Mural in Midwife-Led Room

Lynne has created a serene mural design in room eight, a midwife-led room on Labour Ward. Lynne worked very closely with staff to create a mural theme which evokes a calming and reassuring environment. Lynne said, ‘in room eight, the theme was based around the idea of bringing the outside in, I wanted to create a serene environment by using images of nature and soothing colours to evoke the feeling of being close to the natural landscape. The room incorporates a scene of wild flowers which ties in perfectly with the colours of the murals in the corridor.’ Each of the midwife-led rooms has a theme which links directly in colour and technique to the rest of the murals across the department.

The murals have been painted on several walls around the room to create a sense of well-being for the room as a whole and to make it feel less clinical for the expectant mother and her birthing partners. Staff and patients were consulted on design and Lynne came up with a series of themed mural that tie together across the departments and rooms.
Lynne has created a stunning mural design in room six, a midwife-led room on Labour Ward. Lynne worked very closely with staff to create a mural theme which creates a calming and reassuring environment. Lynne said, In room six, the theme was based around the idea of oriental blossoms. As the Labour Ward is also using aromatherapy techniques I knew this theme would fit perfectly with some of the oils they are using.’ Staff and patients were consulted on design and Lynne came up with a series of themed mural that tie together across the departments and rooms. The murals feature design-led floral imagery and natural images such as trees and plants that evoke strong memories and feelings of calmness and well-being.

The reception area at the Labour Ward has been transformed with the use of a large, calming mural on the back wall focusing on colour and subtle floral imagery. Lynne said, ‘The reception area at the Labour Ward is the first port of call for many expectant and anxious mums (I know I’ve been there a couple of times!!) I wanted to create something that evokes a feeling of calmness and well-being and also to create a design that incorporates colours that will be used throughout the department to ensure care and continuity.’

The mural fits perfectly into the waiting room which also features new softer lighting fitted to compliment the mural. The theme extends out into the corridor across the walls and also onto a pillar. The motif of the dragonfly continues throughout the entire Labour Ward corridor and into the midwife-led rooms. Helping her on this project Lynne had the very talented Bethan Mure and Sian Morrell studying at NCN and Jordie Bokor studying Architecture at the University of Nottingham and also Chloe Purcell, a Year 10 student from Heanor School. Staff and patients were consulted on design and Lynne came up with a series of themed mural that tie together across the departments and rooms.

Labour Ward Entrance Mural

Lynne worked closely with staff at Derby Royal Hospital Labour Ward to create murals in the busy entrance and reception areas. The entrance to the Labour is a busy and thriving area of the hospital and this entrance has a very high footfall for the whole hospital. Lynne created a simple mural that covers two walls for this entrance, so it has relevance to people visiting all areas of the hospital, but particularly to those visiting Labour, Neonatal and Maternity. Lynne worked with two students on painting the entrance Sian Morrell studying at NCN and Jordi Bokor studying Architecture at the University of Nottingham. Lynne said, ‘The students were great to work with, full of ideas and talent! I’m looking forward to working with them again soon’ Staff and patients were consulted on design and Lynne came up with a series of themed mural that tie together across the departments and rooms.

The birthing pool room is an incredibly special area, so the designs were created to be very simple and relaxing to create ambience. Lynne painted the mural with help from Chloe Purcell, a Year 10 student from Heanor School. Chloe Purcell worked hard on the mural helping with colour mixing and painting up the dragonflies.
