Plinther

I had a fantastic time on the standing on the plinth on my birthday. It was great to have Trafalgar Square singing Happy Birthday to me!! Thanks to everyone who came along to watch and to those who sent messages of support. Thanks also to those who watched online. The hour went really quickly and it was beautiful evening. I think Little H (the bump) enjoyed it he was kicking loads and dancing around. Whilst on the plinth I created a series of ‘Pregnant on the Plinth’ Postcards which I am currently giving out to family and friends.

Pregnant on the Plinth!!!

I have been one of the few to be selected to stand on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square’s for Anthony Gormley’s new art project ‘One and Other’.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the project, it takes place over 100 days and every hour a different person will be selected to stand on the plinth. The scene on the plinth will be broadcast 24 hours a day at http://www.oneandother.co.uk . It will also be covered on Sky Arts starting on 10 July. A full-length documentary and a book is also planned to sum up the event, from the first application to the final hour.

My place has been confirmed as Wednesday August 12th from 11pm to 12pm. Should be an interesting task getting a heavily pregnant artist onto the plinth, I’ll be 31 weeks pregnant then – so don’t expect any dancing about! I’ll spend my hour just being me – so I’ll be listening to The Smiths and sketching some ‘pregnancy plinth postcards’ to give away. I will also try to raise awareness of Bliss.

Bliss is the special care baby charity, which provides vital support and care to premature and sick babies across the UK. Founded 30 years ago, they offer guidance and information at a critical time in families’ lives. They also fund ground-breaking research and campaign for babies to receive the best possible level of care regardless of when and where they are born. http://www.bliss.org.uk/

Hal raised £210.00 for Bliss at his first birthday party in March. It was a fantastic, sunny day and it was magical for him to share it with his family and friends. Simon and I took this special day to let everyone know that Hal will be an older brother in October!!!
Hal at the launch of QUAD

Hal enjoys listening to the artist Bill Drummond at the launch of QUAD and ‘The 17’ exhibition.
Renowned artist and musician Bill Drummond created a unique performance piece to celebrate QUAD and particularly its location in Derby. 100 groups from all areas of the city were recruited to take part in the project, which involved singing one note together for five minutes and having a group photograph and video portrait taken. These 100 separate sound recordings were mixed together to create one huge piece of choral music. Everyone who took part in the project was invited to the performance event on the Market Place on the evening of Friday 22nd August, to hear the one and only playback of this recording. The 100 group photographs are on show on QUAD walls and digital screens, along with the screening of The17 film by Bill Drummond in the exhibitions resources area. There is a specially created publication about the project available to buy at the QUAD Box office. For more information visit http://www.the17.org

Happy 2009!!

Happy 2009!! Well, it’s been a while since I’ve had a moment spare to write my blog as I’ve been so busy (as you will see form the News section) I am preparing for a couple of exhibitions that are coming up this year, one solo show and a mixed exhibition. Hal is growing fast and is as inspirational as ever – we now share a studio space which is great and he has already started creating things!! We attended the launch of QUAD in September 2008, but have been popping in regularly for a coffe and to meet up with friends. Hal like to admire himself in one of ‘The 17’ photographs in the current exhibition on the ground floor. We are really excited about QUAD it’s a fantastic gallery, cinema, cafe bar and workshop that anyone can use. It provides facilities and services that connect people and businesses to art and film, creating opportunities for entertainment, education and participation.

Hanging out with Hal at the Open Studios Event Summer 2008

Hal enjoyed his first Open Studios Event. He was helping me to exhibit my artwork and made a very unique and creative addition to my new studio space on the third floor. I think he was the most popular exhibit and certainly drew in the crowds. He also got to meet many of the other artists that work in the Mill and certainly enjoyed all the cuddles and the attention he got. Hal says thank you to Jo, Hannah, Laura, Lindsay, Antonia, and so many others, for all the lovely cuddles he got over the weekend!!

Little Hal - The Emerging Artist!!

Little Hal is already making his mark in the art world at only 9 weeks old! Hal was invited to lay the virtual foundation stone at the launch event for Living Derby at Derby Museum and Gallery. As Living Derby’s youngest member he was honoured to be asked to mark this momentous occasion. In front of a large audience he pressed the button which laid the foundation stone – he wasn’t nervous or phased at all, but I think this was due to the fact that he was sleeping serenely throughout! For more information about Living Derby go to http://livingderby.squarespace.com/

Hal was 13 weeks old and wide awake when he worked with his Mum on Bill Drummond’s ‘The 17’ project. Opening later in the year, QUAD is currently under construction in the heart of Derby city centre. QUAD will be a thriving centre for art and film. Hal was with Mum as part of the Mother’s group and this group photograph, which stars Hal, will be displayed in an exhibition that will launch QUAD.

It’s taken a while to get back to my blog, as I have been very busy on my most important creation to date! Hal Thomas Hollingsworth was born at 1.52am on Thursday March 20th. It was all a bit of a surprise, as he came 6 weeks early! He is absolutely gorgeous, very tiny with a big personality! We love him very much.
